Colour test for Fingolfin based on a previous concept done for "The Fall of Fingolfin" - a stop-motion shortfilm that tells the story the Fall of Fingolfin, High King of the Noldor.

I used the brief descriptions found in the Silmarillion, War of the Jewels (HoME 11) and The Lays of Beleriand (HoME 3) to create a colour palette for Fingolfin's armour and clothing.

This is truly lovely, and excellent job drawing from the source material for details such as the shield and heraldry. Absolutely beautiful!

The one thing that bothers me about this otherwise beautiful picture is: why is he wearing Finwe's symbol on his chest, a star on his shield, and his own heraldric device is nowhere to be seen?

No, he's not wearing Finwë's heraldry on his chest - he's wearing the High King of the Noldor crest. According to Tolkien's own design (J.R.R. Tolkien: Artist and Illustrator. Patterns and Devices), the High Kings of the Noldor used this crest. If you look carefully you'll see it's tipped 45 degrees as Tolkien described.
Also, he's wearing his own device on his crown, belt (on every one of the silver medallions) and on his sword.

Great, I didn't know it and wondered what would be Fingon's emblem during Nirnaeth. Now I know

Forgot to add, Tolkien described his shield as blue and set with a star, hence the design.

Ah. That was the one that was really confusing me. Do you remember where he said that?
